A Trip in Tainan

On the 228 Peace Memorial Day long weekend, my roommate, Skyler, suggested we could have a one-day tour in Tainan. At first, I was not genuinely interested. When it comes to Tainan, “boring” was the first comment pop-up in my head. I thought there is nothing special but historic sites like Fort Zeelandia and Fort Provintia. Not to mention how many times have I visited Tainan on school field trips. Despite my initial reservations, I ultimately accepted Skyler's sincere invitation and decided to give it a shot. To be honest, the trip altered my stereotype drastically, in a good way, of course.

Our tour kicked off with a splash of good luck - a bird left us a little gift for good measure! As we walked by on the sidewalk, I looked up at the huge flock of birds chirping in the trees and said, “ Isn’t it wonderful?” But as soon as I said that, a bird dropped a bomb on me, leaving me covered in the turd. ( No, I don’t have pictures and why should I? ) Thank god I wore a hat that day. It’s hard to believe that I already got a crystal clear and smutty memory branded in my brain way before I visited anything. Anyways, I cleared the filth on my hat and continued my journey. By the way, I bought a lottery later to testify the bird poop fortunate and won nothing.

Skyler knew that I have visited Tainan many times, so he only took me to places but famous historic sites. Our first stop was the NCKU; we wandered around the campus and enjoyed the nice weather. I really like how they preserve those old buildings built during the Japanese colonial period in Taiwan period and turn them into schools.

I got to admit that I look terrible in this picture. I look like a local creep. Come on, the sun was bright that day.

Soon after visiting the NCKU campus, we went to Chuan Mei Theater. The theater is well-known for its hand-painted movie posters. As a movie enthusiast, I was quite stunned by the theater. I thought those movie posters were about a decade old, but no, they still paint those gigantic posters by hand. How incredible and rare it is!

Here comes the best part of the tour, we visited the National Museum of Taiwan Literature. To be honest, I didn’t expect too much before entering it. Maybe just some old books in the showcases, nothing eye-catching. It turns out the museum is mind-blowing. You don’t need to be a bookworm or even a literature lover to have fun in the museum. It’s actually really approachable to anyone. Besides, the inner design of the museum is modern, in contrast, the building itself is a well-preserved Japanese colonial period city hall. Simple yet elegant. Let’s get to the point. The exhibitions there were very creative and interactive. There was a machine that gives a fortune stick like we used to get in temples, and the contexts are random poems instead of predictions. It’s an awesome concept that evokes nostalgia. Besides, there were many theme exhibitions like aborigines, publishers in Taiwan, and animals. Overall, the National Museum of Taiwan Literature is really a place for learning about literature and having a good time.

This one-day tour in Tainan was amazing. It altered my image of Tainan. Now I have already fallen in love with this place. I will visit it more in my free time.
