My New Roommate
The new semester had begun a few weeks ago, and naturally, I had new roommates. To my relief, I am not living with bad roommates like those I once lived with, who played table tennis and made loud phone calls in the room. Thank God, those nightmares are gone. Among three of my new roommates, Skyler is the most exciting person. When I first time moved into the dorm room, I only saw his piles of books on the bookshelves and messy stationeries on his table. Genuinely, I presumed he was kinda a nerd, at least not a fun guy to live with, and I was so wrong. He’s a sophisticated person who has tons of incredible life experiences to share.
What’s so special about Skyler? Well, he’s from Hong Kong and twenty-seven years old. It feels like he’s kinda a big brother of mine, and he’s a caring friend indeed. He's never stingy to borrow his stuff. Also, he was a mariner for a few years before he came to Taiwan and study at CCU. He went to many countries for the sake of work, so he basically traveled to several nations for free. Such as Canada, France, Morocco, etc. That’s something I really long for. He also often shares his memories from work with me, such as his life on ships and the difficulties he faced. Like having meals with mariners from different countries, and shoveling heavily accumulated snow on the deck, for instance. One of the most intriguing memories he shared is the night he and his colleagues went to a strip club in France; that’s no ordinary strip club, people drink wine and watch the performance just like opera. Such a unique experience.
Skyler and I have one biggest interest in common, which is drinking alcohol. We are both enthusiastic about drinking. Don’t misunderstand. Though we drink often, we ain’t alcoholics. Never have we got drunk, felt dizzy at most. When we drink, he talks about his childhood and life back in Hong Kong. Such as being bullied by classmates, having a hard time finding a job, etc. He’s a chatty person, especially after drinking cups of brandy. To be exaggerated, I think I can write him a biography depending on what have said in these three weeks. It’s undeniably fun to have conversations with him. I’m glad that I have such an interesting roommate and friend.
